Why I Love ... Wednesdays is a meme hosted by Alexis over at reflections of a bookaholic. Each Wednesday is an opportunity to explore a different aspect of literature and why I love it. Today's topic: favorite character.
This is such a hard topic. I'm pretty sure we are talking all time favorite here and not current book favorite. Tricky, tricky ... OK. My all time favorite character from a book would have to be Johnny from 'The Outsiders'.
I was so addicted to that book as a teenager that I actually read it over 100 times - really. I think I can still quote most of the first page. And I loved Johnny! He seemed so lost and yet he was such a voice of reason. If everyone had just listened to Johnny, how differently things would have turned out. I still cry when I think of how he died. And in my mind I can see his dark eyes and unruly hair. I guess we never really get over our first love. And Johnny was mine.
You've got me thinking, Dana. This is indeed a challenging question!
ReplyDeleteJohnny's such a wonderful choice, and do you know what? The first character who came to my mind was Dobby from HP. Perhaps these seemingly disparate characters have some traits in common: earnest hearts, loyalty, sacrifice.
YES! Ralph Macchio as Johnny was brilliant! I really liked that movie, don't think I ever read the book. But I understand your adoration.
ReplyDeleteLaurie - great comparison! I like it.
ReplyDeleteJade - I have to admit I never did see the movie. I was afraid it would ruin the book for me.
Dunno who he is but he sounds interesting :)
ReplyDeleteBloduedd - you've never read 'The Outsiders' by S. E. Hinton? You should.
ReplyDeleteK, that's the second reference I've heard to that book. I've got to try it now. :)
ReplyDeleteI read and enjoyed The Outsiders when I was younger. Unfortunately I have to admit that I no longer remember Johnny.
ReplyDeleteJohnny was PonyBoy's best friend.
