TBR Tuesday

For awhile now, I have been thinking that I would like to share some of my TBR list from time to time and also to see what's on yours. If you feel the same, join me in a meme - TBR Tuesdays! How?
  • Create a post telling us about one or two of the books on your TBR list
  • Link back to this post
  • Leave a comment with the link to your post so we can all check it out
I hope you will join me in this. It should be fun to see what everyone has waiting in the wings.

For my first TBR Tuesday, I am featuring one of the books on my list that I have also committed to read for the Back to the Classics Challenge. The book is called The Tin Drum by Gunter Grass. Ever heard of it? This book was the first novel written by the author (written in 1959) and also won him the Nobel Prize for literature in 1999. It is translated from German. So far I'm sure you are chomping at the bit to get your hands on this one. Wait for it!

Check out the first few lines:
Granted: I'm an inmate in a mental institution; my keeper watches me, scarcely lets me out of sight, for there's a peephole in the door, and my keeper's eye is the shade of brown that can't see through blue-eyed types like me.
So my keeper can't possibly be my enemy. I've grown fond of this man peeping through the door, and the moment he enters my room I tell him incidents from my life so he can get to know me in spite of the peephole between us.
The blurb from Amazon reads as follows:  Acclaimed as the greatest German novel written since the end of World War II, The Tin Drum is the autobiography of thirty-year-old Oskar Matzerath, who has lived through the long Nazi nightmare and who, as the novel begins, is being held in a mental institution.  Willfully stunting his growth at three feet for many years, wielding his tin drum and piercing scream as anarchistic weapons, he provides a profound yet hilarious perspective on both German history and the human condition in the modern world.

I am really looking forward to getting into this one!
