Why I Love Wednesdays

Why I Love ... Wednesdays is a meme hosted by Alexis over at reflexions of a bookaholic. Each Wednesday is an opportunity to explore a different aspect of literature and why I love it. There was a choice for today's theme and I have chosen ...favorite type of character.

If you guys have been paying attention you will know that I LOVE strong female characters in novels. Simpering perfect ladies make me crazy! I just want to shake them. (and I'm not talking just in books here!) What I want to read about is a woman who knows her mind and isn't afraid to get dirty. A smart, stand up kind of girl. She doesn't have to be perfect - none of us are, but she does have to be solid and consistent.

Strong females can make or break a book for me. Think Professor McGonagall in 'Harry Potter'. You could always count on her and trust her. She was no nonsense and always rose to the occasion. How could you not love her? Or Liesel from 'The Book Thief'. Nothing stood in her way. She stood up for what she believed in at all costs. More than could be said for many of the adults around her.

Real women are strong! Throughout history strong women have made a difference in the world. In politics: Cleopatra, Queen Elizabeth, Golda Meir. In literature: Virginia Wolfe, Mary Shelly, George Elliot. In my own life: my Mom, Mrs. Trischuck (grade 5/6 teacher), my sisters. Portraying women as less than they are does everyone a disservice! Novels with characters that remind us of the strength of women should be celebrated. Now I'll get off my soapbox. Just one more thing ...

My number one, absolute favorite, I want to be her when I grow up??? Princess Elizabeth from 'The Paper Bag Princess', without question! Now there's a chick who could take care of herself! The Paper Bag Princess (Classic Munsch)

Do you have a favorite female character? Share! Please!
