Why I Love ... Wednesday!

Why I Love ... Wednesdays is a meme hosted by Alexis over at reflections of a bookaholic. Each Wednesday is an opportunity to explore a different aspect of literature and why I love it. Today's topic: Childhood Book Friend
I don't know how many people have even heard of her, but my best book friend when I was but a young un' was Beatrice Belden - better known as Trixie Belden. Trixie solved mysteries with her friends kind of like Nancy Drew but her mysteries were more fun and way scarier!

Just seeing this cover makes me shiver still. "the Black Jacket Mystery" was really scary! I can feel the butterflies in my tummy. But Trixie was always able to come out on top and save the day.

Trixie lived on Crabapple farm - with horses! And a best friend named Honey. And they had a club called the Bob-Whites. And they solved mysteries. What was there for a young city girl not to like?

It's because of what I learned from Trixie that I always hold tight to my purse when I am in a crowd. I used to dream I was her. She even had a cool name! Sadly, none of  my daughters were ever interested in reading these books. But I still have them. Maybe one day I'll have grand-daughters who will share my Trixie-love.
Has anyone else out there ever heard of these books? I may have just totally dated myself but I've heard the books are being re-released. So I could be younger than you think.

Have a great Wednesday!

  1. I have definitely heard of Trixie. I never did read about her but now I kind of want to after your post! I know that feeling of not passing the love of a book or character down to your children. I have bookcases full of books just waiting for my grandchildren. In my family, I think the love of reading has skipped over an entire generation.

  2. Personally, I have never heard of her but I put your post on My Life. One Story at a Time. with an invitation to anyone who has to pop over and visit. I can't remember one specific author or book from childhood but I do remember reading everything I could get my hands on. Donna

  5. Received an email about your poll. I checked that I didn't care if you rated or nor because I think the review speaks for itself. I rarely rate a book unless I so loved it that I had to say "two thumbs up" etc. (My opinion.)

  8. I've never heard of these books but they do look awesome. Now I wish I had stumbled across them as a child. I'll probably end up grabbing one so I can experience the awesomeness. Great post.

  9. If there were horses involved I don't know why I haven't heard of this before! I was a bit of a horse mad girl and loved Patricia Leitch's Jinny series (which I re-read recently and is just as good as an adult).

  10. The first one I read was The Mystem Off Glenn Road. I was so thrilled with it that I started with the beginning of the series. Each one I read just pleased me more. If you're going to read them start with The Mystery of the Mansion. it's where Trixie and Honey meet and find Jim Frayne who is one of the central characters of the book. I had such a crush on Jim.

  11. I tried to read one of hers once but I thought Nancy Drew was better. I kind of want to revisit this question. I want to reread a Nancy Drew mystery and read a Trixie Beldon mystery and compare and contrast. I'm thinking about it!

  12. Alexis - fun idea. Nancy never quite made it for me but that may all be different now that I've grown up.

  13. It's a pity I had never heard of these books, they sound real fun! It's good that I don't consider myself too old for children's books, right?! I did read a lot of Nancy Drew when I was a kid though!

  14. Sounds like Trixie would've been a great deal more fun than Nancy Drew. I couldn't ND but I used to read quite a bit of it, rather like nagging tooth that's already giving you a headache!!.....
