Why I Love ... Wednesday!

Why I Love ... Wednesdays is a meme hosted by Alexis over at reflections of a bookaholic. Each Wednesday is an opportunity to explore a different aspect of literature and why I love it. Today's topic: Favorite Book Couple.

This post is going to totally cement my place among the geeks of the world. The first time I read this book I cried over the tragic love story of the main characters. I was in about grade 10. Here it comes. The book is .... Antony and Cleopatra by William Shakespeare. They loved each other so much but politics and war conspired against them. Stolen moments were all they had. And, of course, they both died in the end.

Both were strong characters who were dedicated to their countries and the duties that went with their positions in life and in their communities. It was like the only time either of them could be themselves was when they were together. OK - even thinking about it now I am getting a little choked up. It's just all so romantic. When she holds the asp to her breast. **sigh**

"Eternity was in our lips and yes,
Bliss in our brows bent."
- William Shakespeare, Antony and Cleopatra, 1.3

O happy horse, to bear the weight of Antony!
Antony and Cleopatra, 1. 5

"She shall be buried by her Antony.
No grave upon the earth will clip in it
A pair so famous."
Act 5, Scene 2, Lines 429-431

  3. I like Shakespeare too, and weren't Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor inspired choices for the movie?
